Think yoga’s not for you? Think again.
I can almost guarantee, every time I tell someone I’m a yoga teacher, I get the same response — "Oh, I’m terrible at yoga," or "I’m not flexible enough for that."
And honestly, it breaks my heart a little.
Because you see, the whole beauty of yoga, is that it really is for everyone.
More Than Just the Poses
Our Western culture has skewed our point of view on what yoga really is - an ancient philosophy, a system of instruction, advice and practices which can nourish and nurture not only our bodies, but our minds (both individual and collective) and even more deeply our soul. Our focus on perfection, competition and physical appearance over holistic wellbeing has lead most people to believe that unless they can do the splits or stand on their head, then yoga is simply unattainable, and therefore 'not for them'.
But as a practitioner or teacher of yoga comes to understand, yoga is not just what happens in a class or on your mat, and certainly isn't limited to physical ability of our bodies. In fact, asana or postures, are just one of the 8-limbs of yoga! Yes, the physical aspect if often our first introduction to yoga, as it is the simplest way to get 'into our body' and therefore closer to how we feel. But the longer and more often we sit with ourselves, the more we notice, the better we understand and the more we feel we have autonomy over our bodies, our choices and our lives. Yoga invites us into stillness, a foreign concept in these fast paced and utterly overwhelming times, and it is here that magic happens! We start to realise our worth isn't only in doing, performing, achieving, but in simply being. It is without doubt, these practices which lead us into being, which have had the most profound effects on my life.
Come as you Are
This is why I try my best to make all of my classes as open and inclusive as possible. Because I truly believe there is a deep benefit for every single one of us to practice yoga in some way. In whatever way feels comfortable, challenging, meaningful and healing to us. What to expect in my classes:
- Guided meditation
- Breath control to calm or activate the nervous system
- Movement and postures offered with multiple cariations
- A chance to both challenge and restire yourself - dependent on what you need in the moment
- A safe space to come as you are
Even the most experienced yogis have an 'off' day! And I always say, the most experienced yogis know when they need to challenge themselves and when they need to step back, restore and rest.
So, if you have a body. If you have a mind and a spirit, then yoga is for you! I don’t need to tell you the plethora of benefits a regular practice can have for you… (mental clarity, increased self-worth, increased energy levels, better mood, enhanced quality of sleep, strength and flexibility…) So what are you waiting for?
